Team USA Gets Olympic Berth For 2008 Olympics Women's Basketball Competition
Team USA Women Basketball never gave Cuba a chance in this championship game in Valdivia, Chile. The made sure they will get the one and only ticket to the 2008 Olympics in this tournament by winning the Championship of the FIBA Americas Championship for Women. In contrast to their first game with the Cubans in this tournament, the game was never even close almost not exciting and ended up with a landslide score of 101-71 in favor of the American women. Top scorers for the U.S. Basketball team were Tina Thompson with 18 points while Diana Taurasi and Katherine Smith scored 15 each. On Cuba's side, Suchitel Avila had 14, Oyanaisy Gelis 13 and Yakelyn Plutín 11.

In consolation, the teams of Cuba, Brazil and Argentina qualified into the World Pre-Olympic Tournament.
