This is the first time you'll ever read this proposition anywhere! When one thinks of the flag bearer for one's country during the opening ceremony of the Olympics where the countries' athletes and sports officials are parading on the Olympic grounds, one can only think of that person as the embodiment of the country's sports aspirations. The flag bearer is the best athlete in that country ( although not necessarily participating in the Olympic games ). For the Philippines, it would be the boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao! Manny, in recent years, has proved to be one of the best fighters in the professional boxing world. He has beaten almost every boxing legend in his weight division. 2 great Mexican professional boxers, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales have since retired after their final duel with Manny Pacquaio.
The prospect of Manny Pacquaio being the torch bearer does not seem very far off. Owing to his self-imposed duty to fight for the country's honor, I don't believe Manny would think twice about agreeing to bear the Philippine flag in the 2008 Olympics opening parade. Hopefully, one of his fights for next year would not coincide with the August 8, 2008 inaugurals.
This will be a big boost for the Philippine athletes morale and would definitely inspire the athletes particularly our boxers to do well and finally bring home a gold medal. Now if only somebody the the Philippine Olympic Committee would propose this to Manny so he would know.
