9 out of 11 American entries for the 2007 AIBA World Boxing Championships will get the first taste of fighting against the "big boys" of amateur boxing. The 2 other boxers, flyweight Rau'shee Warren and bantamweight Gary Russell Jr., are hold-overs from the 2005 USA boxing team that participated in the same competition in Mianyang, China. Both brought home bronze medals from that competition.
Ligh flyweight Luis Yanez, Featherweight Reynell Williams, Light welterweight Javier Molina, Demetrius Andrade, Light heavyweight Christopher Downs, Middleweight Shawn Estrada, Lightweight Sadam Ali, Super Heavyweight Michael Hunter, Heavyweight Deontay Wilder, all will get a chance to go for boxing gold in home soil and clinch a spot at the 2008 Olympic boxing competition in Beijing China. US National team coaches Dan Campbell, Mike Stafford and Willy Price are preparing the team for their respective matches in GOTIME in Chicago, Illinois.
The 2007 World Boxing Championships will run from October 23 to November 3. The schedule will primarily be composed of preliminaries till the end of October. Quarterfinals on November 1, semi-finals on November 2 and the fight for the championship and automatic Olympic berth will be on the last day November 3, 2007.
